January 1 - Start of tax season. Check your withholding.

January 15 - Due date for the final quarterly estimated tax payment of 2007. Use Form 1040-ES.

January 31 - If you did not pay your last installment of estimated tax by January 15, you may choose (but are not required) to file your income tax return (Form 1040) for 2007 by January 31. W-2s are due from your employer.

February 15 - If you claimed exemption from income tax withholding last year, you have to file a new W-4 Form with your employer by today to continue your exemption for 2007.

March 3 - Farmer and fisherman filing deadline. If one of these is your occupation and you did not make estimated tax payments for 2007, avoid penalties by filing your tax return and paying any tax due today. For those who paid their estimated taxes by Jan. 15, the due date is April 15.

April 15 - Tax Returns Due. Your 2007 income tax return is due. Deadline for making 2007 contributions to your Roth IRA and making your Q1 estimated tax payment is also this date.

Get an automatic six-month extension to file your return; Form 4868. This form must be postmarked on or before today. With the extension, your new deadline for filing your return will be October 15, 2008.

June 16 - If you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien living and working (or on military duty) outside the United States and Puerto Rico, file Form 1040 and pay any tax, interest, and penalties due. Make the second payment of your 2008 estimated tax if you are not paying your income tax for the year through withholding (or will not pay in enough tax that way). Use Form 1040-ES.

September 15 - Make the third payment of your 2007 estimated tax if you are not paying your income tax for the year through withholding (or will not pay in enough tax that way). Use Form 1040-ES.

October 15 - If you filed Form 4868 extending the due date of your return, file your 2007 tax return by today and pay any tax, interest and penalties due.
